WAS THERE WAS A BUS ROUTE FROM LONDON TO INDIA IN THE 1950S?

The thought of bus route from London to India sounds impossible, especially when considering the time this was done. But yet, back then, it may have been seen as fairly… normal…?

According to various sources, the trip took around 50 days from London to Calcutta. And it cost £85 in 1957 – which today equates to around £1,437. The trip also includes food, and no doubt stopping to view quite a few cities on the way.  The price did go up to £145 in the ’70s, damn inflation…!

Bus Route

The bus wasn’t your ordinary bus either. It (somehow) had bunk beds – just check the picture above for evidence. The route would be as follows:

London – Germany – Austria – Yugoslavia (Serbia) – Bulgaria – Turkey – Iran – Afghanistan – Pakistan – and finally… India.

But what happened to the bus and where is it today? Well. The bus had an accident and wasn’t able to travel anymore. Despite it being repaired, it did a few more trips before being permanently brought to a halt in 1976.

Oh, and the bus was called Albert.
