HOW WOULD DISGRACED ATHLETES AT THE ANCIENT OLYMPICS BE PUNISHED?

Found cheating during the ancient Olympics? Fled the day before your big day because you got scared? Don’t worry too much, you only have to pay a fine, and have your named inscribed on a statue for all to see for the rest of eternity…

During the ancient Olympics, the Zanes of Olympia were statues of Zeus which were paid for by the fines mentioned above – paid for by the athletes who violate the rules.

According to a few sources, the main reason why the statues were paid for by the athletes and then placed in front of the entrance, was so mainly to dissuade others from cheating or violating the rules.

Such violations mainly included bribery, but one time, one of the athletes fled the day before the ‘big day’ and was fined for being cowardly…

The statues can still be seen today, in front of the stadium. Just remember, that these cheaters and ‘cowards’ will be remembered for hundreds/thousands of years to come.

Don’t break the rules… I guess.
