Wolverine is one of the most popular superheroes out there, but like most characters, there is usually a reason they were created, so why did Marvel create Wolverine?
Travel back to 1974, your name is Roy Thomas, and you’ve just taken over from the legendary Stan Lee. No pressure, Roy. Roy realised that only 5% of the readers of the Marvel comics were Canadian. And that, to Roy, was something that could be fixed.
According to a few sources, Wolverine might have been known as The Bagder! But the Wolverine – being an animal that has a history of causing mischief in Canada, probably made the most sense. Not to mention, it’s just a better superhero name!
According to Roy, he only had three requirements for Wolverine: (1) He was Canadian (2) He was short, because a wolverine is a small animal. (3) He had a quick temper, because wolverines are known for being fierce and taking on beasts far bigger than they are.”
It might be why quite a few of the X-Men characters are from different parts of the globe, e.g., Nightcrawler – Germany, Colossus – Russia, Storm – Kenya…etc.
